Most Common Injection Moulding FAQs

As an injection moulding company based in Yorkshire, we know our fair share when it comes to injection moulding. We have a team of experienced technicians and engineers with years of experience specialising in low to medium volume injection moulding. If you’re looking for an injection moulding company in the UK, you may have a few questions that need answering before the process begins, here are some of the most common injection moulding FAQs we get asked.

What is Injection Moulding?

Injection moulding is a manufacturing process in which lots of small plastic pellets are melted down to a molten state. The molten plastic is then injected into a ready-made closed mould. Once injected, the mould and the plastic are left to cool and solidify to create the desired shape. The full injection moulding process is explained in more detail on our injection moulding page!

What Are the Benefits of Injection Moulding?

Injection moulding comes with a variety of benefits and should be a manufacturing process considered. Some of the main benefits of injection moulding include:

  • Efficient & high production
  • High detail
  • Low waste
  • Low cost per part
  • Large material choice
  • Repeatability

Where Are Injection Moulded Products Used?

Injection moulded items and products are quite literally all around us, you may not even know it. it’s one of the most versatile manufacturing processes around and can be seen in:

  • Everyday household items such as appliances, toys, stationery etc
  • Transportation in the automotive, aerospace and marine industries
  • Medical & Healthcare
  • Agriculture
  • Sports & Leisure

What Materials Are Used in Injection Moulding?

A huge range of thermoplastics can be used with injection moulding. Each material has its own components and benefits. Here at Protomould Plastics, we use a range of materials depending on your requirements. Some of the materials we use are:

  • Polypropylene (PP)
  • Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)
  • Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA)
  • Styrene-Ethylene Butadiene Styrene (SEBS)

How Much Does Injection Moulding Cost?

The cost of injection moulding manufacturing is completely dependent on each project and varies. Some factors that will affect the final cost of your injection moulding project are the complexity, production volume and material.

Does Injection Moulding Impact the Environment?

Traditionally, injection moulding has faced criticism due to the negative impact it has previously had on the environment. Invented back in the 1800s, injection moulding, along with most manufacturing processes and businesses, was not focused on sustainability and environmental impacts. However, following the rapid growth in technologies over the last few decades, Plas Tech has been heavily interested in ensuring our carbon footprint and environmental impact are reduced. Whilst we have heavily invested in our solar infrastructure, we are often able to run on fully sustainable power. We also have our own granulation and recycling facility to environmentally reuse materials

Compared to other manufacturing procedures, injection moulding is more energy-efficient and produces less waste. Our modern injection moulding machines use less power and have less carbon impact than older models and other businesses.
